Program Description

Humanized Naturalism: Japanese Gardens as Therapeutic Spaces

This talk explores the dramatically evolving function of Japanese gardens around the world in the 21st century. It shows how they have grown from representing Japan, the dominant 19th and 20th century roles, to embrace broader identities that return them to their basic uses in pre-modern Japan. The lecture presents Japanese-style gardens as a kind of landscape equivalent of "classical music." It examines why they have the power to connect us to values and experiences that can improve our lives.
